I would have to say the Meyer has been the standard for ever. The old NY Meyer seems to be the sound many sax players go for and I have seen many new MPs look very much like the, you got it - Meyer.
Meyer experiences? Any one playing one now? or played one?
I have an old one that I have started playing a lot again. I miss a little of the really high harmonics on it but really like the resistence and tone.
I myself use a 5M as my main piece; not too bright but it's got a nice warm, lively tone and decent altissimo. But atm, it's off at the shop with Ed Zentera to be worked on; can't wait to get it back. Right now though I'm using a Dukoff D7 piece which actually isn't as edgy as it's tenor counterparts, not too bad of a lead piece and it's fun to play on, but it's still got that Dukoff sound as soon as I hit high A and that can get on my nerves after too much playing.
I'd say Meyer and Beechler are the jazz alto standards, at least for that kind of sound.
