There are so many great saxophonists out there.

I am going to have to say that some of my favorite alto saxophonists are Kenny Garrett for his sound, originality of musical style, and his killer chops all around.

And of course there is Gerald Albright - he also has a great sound, great ideas, and soul!

I'm also going to have to say Vincent Herring - no one plays straight ahead like he can.

Those would have to be my three favorite alto players. If I forgot someone, I will post them later.

I would have to say Parker, Albright and Marinthal if I had to pick 3. Just a note that the "three" are always changing but these 3 I have come back to a few times now.

I don't know if I care too much for Garrett's sound, but haven't really given him a chance as far as style is concerned so I don't have much comment there. Gerald Albright is a modern great, IMO. His tone is one that I personally as an alto player strive for. Marienthal (whom I haven't listened to in a while) is an awesome player himself. One more player I would add to my list is Dave Koz. So maybe he's more on the smooth jazz side of things, but I find his alto technique and tone to be superb.

Of course, you wouldn't expect Shannon to blow her own horn, so I will do it for her.

I saw Shannon perform recently in Temecula, California. I was absolutely blown away at how incredibly talented this kid is at only 18 years. (Of course, what would you expect after years of mentoring by someone like Greg Vail!!!).

You need to do yourself a huge favor and go see her perform live at one of her gigs. Not only is she a fabulous sax player, but she composes a lot of her own music, of which I understand will be on her next CD. Every Jazz fan loves the old standards, but Shannon's original work is something you've got to hear.

At least you will be able to saw you saw her before she becomes hugely famous!!

I would have to say Davis Sanborn still kills me too. Listening to him today and his sax just speaks to me.
