Inevitably, I must talk about the equipment that I play, love and live with. Playing a more contemporary style, I have found that metal mouthpieces help me attain the sound I want the most efficiently. I have been playing Beechler mouthpieces for a few years now, and I am very happy with the sound.
But not only do these mouthpieces sound great in the contemporary style, I have had many people tell me that they blend very well in a straight ahead jazz setting as well. They were very surprised with the dark sound that I was able to get with metal mouthpieces.
I have played several different mouthpieces, metal, plastic, etc. For a while, I even played one of their plastic mouthpieces, one of their Diamond mouthpieces while I was making the transition from hard rubber to metal because I liked its sound.
No one mouthpiece is for everyone, but I really recommend giving these mouthpieces a try. You will be pleasantly surprised.
I just tried one on tenor the other day but it was really loud and couldn't play soft below E, and I got a Dukoff instead.
