Michael Brecker is the most ingenuitive saxophone player since those like Coltrane, Bird, and Cannonball. Tenors players today still strive to sound like Brecker, have technique like Brecker, play with Brecker's emotion. Brecker has truly made an impressive impact on the next generation of musicians.
My one friend tells me there's only one player who can probably blow Brecker's @$$ out of the water and that is a man by the name of Jeff Coffin, who plays with Bela and the Flecktones. So...who knows. But Michael is a very impressive player and especially after his recent battle with leukemia, I give the man all the respect I have. _________________ JP

I dig what Jeff Coffin does both in his own CD's, and what he has done with other bands (including the flecktones), but in my mind he doesn't surpass michael brecker at all. Michael Brecker is the only sax player I know that can get an entire generation of sax players spending hundreds of thousands of hours collectively trying to emulate his mistakes because they sounded that cool.
Jeff Coffin can play his butt off, but he can't blow Michael Brecker's butt out of the water.
Jeff Coffin is a very talented saxophonist, but I don't think he could touch Brecker. Brecker is a legend, Coffin is not. He might be one day, but for now, Brecker is untouchable.
One thing I might not have mentioned is that my friend was talking about from a live perspective, maybe not so much in terms of playability, etc. I didn't mean to say Brecker sucked (because if I did I would not be alive right now ), just so we're clear on that. _________________ JP
i've seen them both live. man, michael brecker really rips, and has some incredible things happening period, within his playing, but i think that jeff coffin live is one of the most inspirational experiences i've ever had. he does incredibly technical things just as well as michael does, but i feel more stories come out of his horn with even the most technical songs. you know, michael has done things for years, from doing the brecker brothers fusion thing with randy, and even gone as far as to do a ballads album (the nearness of you: the ballad book?) with cats like james taylor, herbie hancock, and jack dejohnette- and so many things suit him, but his playing is so technical sometimes, its hard to hear what his horn is trying to say through him. i guess what i'm saying is that even tho michael brecker is a GOD on a saxophone, jeff coffin touches my soul with his story telling tone to his technical abilities. _________________ Have a great day, and Groove On!
