For us nontrumpet players, or new trumpet players, what do you feel the differences are in ability, technique and facility between playing solo trumpet or playing lead trumpet?
Is it possible to do both appropriately and well? Do certain qualities of one inhibit being able to do the other just as well? Which do you feel would be better to aim for? Which do you think would have most success? What are ways to go about achieving becoming a solo trumpet player? A lead trumpet player?
I too am a non-trumpet player, but the one player at this year's District jazz conference (actually second player, who also takes lessons from Wynton Marsalis) sounded like the lead player. But when I say that I don't mean that in an entirely good way. As an ensemble player, he stuck out like a sore thumb with the ensemble. Great soloist; poor ensemble player.
