What is a safe Mouthpiece? I call a MP safe when I have heard a lot of different people on the same piece and thought it was good for them each time.

For years I sent people to Yanagisawa - mediem tip, 6-7 for a safe Tenor or Alto piece. I feel the same way about Jody Jazz now. I think most intermediate players and beginning jazz students will devlop well on these.

Many different Mouthpieces are used by as many different guys are there are Mouthpieces. It is a very personal thing as you get better. But what do you use while getting your sound together?

Give them a try.

For jazz, I also think the Rouseau Jazz is nice. I have a Bari and had a few students get them for Bari too and they all sounded good on them.

Just a few ideas...

On tenor I use either an Otto 5* (that was opened up to more like a 6 with an opening of .88") or a Dukoff D6 (with an opening around .95"). On alto I use a Meyer 5M (which has an opening around .70"). It's all a matter of preference. I don't think you can look at someone who uses a smaller tip opening and call them inexperienced or trying to play it safe. It depends on their sound preferences, but it normally goes without saying that wider tipped mpc's are harder to control. I used to play on a D7, and I still would today but I sold it in hopes of a mellower sound (which I didn't find with a D6 btw). I've played on a D8 (.105") and still held my own. Just depends on the player and their sound preference.

I play Beechler on alto an soprano (both metal), a link on my tenor, and a jody jazz esp on bari. The only time I'm not playing on a metal mouthpiece is when I am playing legit or clarinet.

Beechler make some really nice mouthpieces too. I guess the important thing for someone just starting to play jazz is to find a medium opening that you can get a good sound out of. 6 or 7 facing seems best until a player starts to really know what they like without any suggestions.
Beechler works well for you sksaxgirl!

Whatever you do, DON'T buy it online. Go into a store and try some, and see what you like best, but make sure to be ready to spend some bread.
