That was the standard. Then came along all the Jap spin offs.
Any of you younger musicians playing vintage or new Selmers?
I played a VI Tenor for many years before trading it out for my Yamaha 875. They can be amazing horns. I know lots of kids play the newer Selmers cuz I see them all over. What do you think about the Selmers, new and old?? _________________ SAXBOY
I've played a Selmer Mark VI, VII, and Super Action 80 (pre Serie II) tenors. The VI and VII were played briefly and the SA80 I played on numerous times (it was my band director's and the tenor I was using through the school went out to the shop several times so I used his SA80 during rehersals and two concerts). The VII and the SA80 to my chops were really stuffy, the SA80 being the stuffier of the two; couldn't play past a low F quietly. The only thing I can do to give these horns justice was that I was playing on a HR mpc on both of these horns. When I played the VI however, I was using my Otto STM but it blew like a dream; effortless, the action was fluid like a mountain stream, the altissimo was effortless; a killer horn.
I own a Selmer LaVoix tenor which isn't Selmer Paris but hey, it's still Selmer. Other than the lacquer wear already after owning it only a year in some spots (on a post, the thumb octave key, and on the G# key) I'm happy with it. I hope to be owning a Serie II alto in the near future. _________________ JP
You know, I am aware of the fact that a lot people love Selmers, and there is a big split for Yamaha people and Selmer people. But I've noticed that a lot of people just play vintage Selmers, and there aren't a whole lot of people who play the new ones. I think that says something.
I agree with you shannon. Most of the time when you here people talking about selmers they are in most cases talking about a vintagew model. But me being an owner of a new reference 54, i have to say its one of the best saxophones i have ever tried.

The Ref Selmers are great saxes. I just played a friends 36 and it really sounded great. When I tested them ages ago, I kept going back and forth over which one I liked best. They are both realoly good!
