Before you can discuss effects, you really need to think about how you will feed them. Your sax must be mic-ed. Stand mics are more traditional but very stationary. Favorites are the Shure SM57 and SM58. Clip on mics can have trade-offs too but do give space and performance issues some assistance.
For me, Clip On Mics are the way to go. I use stand mics too, but live shows are much easier for me with a clip. My favorite clip is the AT - Audio Technica. But I now others that love the Shure, SD, AKG and others.
I prefer clip on, wireless mics so that I have the freedom to move around. It sucks for clarinet, sop or flute though. So I end up having to bring both to everything. Bummer.
Most of the performance me and my jazz go to, theres either
1) A lone mic up front
2) 2-3 mics around the band, say, in front of sax's and 2 off to the sides for when the trombones and trumpets come forward
3) No mics at all (Which bug me)
i've never really worked with a clip on mic before. I dunno if I want to use one really, unless it had good padding so it doesn't bend my bell/scrape the lacquer off. _________________ No one can resist good ol' PapaBehr

Your hands touching your sax is much more damaging than the rubber clamp on a standard clip. I have used clips on the same sax for 16 years and you can't see where it goes - no marks at all. On the other hand, 16 years of finger wear, acid and all - lots of missing lacquer now.
What kind of wireless system do you use Shannon? I see clip on mic's galore that claim to be wireless but have a cable somewhere in the setup that drives me crazy. I think depending on the venue, mic's really aren't needed. For example, at our last talent show (took place in a larger auditorium), it was me and a keys player doing a song. So we mic'd the keyboard (it was my Yamaha PSR-275 with the speakers built into it), then I just blew with no mic and I was heard a-ok according to everyone I talked to. So it definitely depends on the venue, but I have yet to use a clip-on mic (wanted to use a lapel mic for that talent show, but, well, we know how that goes). _________________ JP
I have an audio technica wireless. It really isn't "wireless". There is a wire that goes from the clip on mic all the way down to my clip battery pack on my hip. Then there are the wires from the box to the outlet and the mic cable from the box to the sound system. So it is not entirely wireless, but I do have the freedom to walk around and stuff.
The only truly wireless mics I've seen are vocal mics that just have the little antenna sticking out of the end.
Well that's what I meant; the box (on your hip) is a receiver that works with the plug-in to the sound system, but there are no wires in that connection, so you can walk around (as you stated). I've heard some horror stories though about attaching that box to your hip; some guys just attach it right to the sax because IF they happen to forget the mic is on the sax, forget to un-clip it and then walk away from it after they put it on the stand or whatever...either the sax gets yanked off the stand or the cable gets screwed up from the pull. _________________ JP
1. Leave the mic clipped to my belt, not the sax and dropped the mic.
2. Had the cable catch on stuff.
3. Bent down and stepped on the cable then couldn't stand back up.
4. Worn a dress only to show up to the gig and then realize I had no where to clip the mic.
5. Worn skirts and had the wireless catch and the skirt and move up when I lifted the sax up.
Hazards of occupation. But I'd rather have the freedom it gives me than have a stationary mic regardless. I hate feeling like I'm restricted to standing in one general location.
