What are your thoughts about where music is now (particularly concerning drumming) as opposed to where it was 50 years ago and where do you think it will go from here in the next 50?
well, I think eventually all drummers will be robots. or drum machines that can hear what the rest of the band is doing and play accordingly.
just kidding. i think eventually drumsets like futureman's from bela fleck will be more prominent, but nothing can 100% reproduce the sound of a really great drummer with a really great REAL drum set or just a drum set.
As far as how drums have changed in the last fifty years, there are obviously improvements. But they have also gotten a lot bigger. How many toms and cymbals can a drummer possibly need?
you know, you made a joke about drum machines, but more and more they're used widely- like in most R/B and rap groups now adays even. i mean, some of them actually bring along a real band, but that's hard to find. as a drummer, i kinda feel a lot of different things about the situation. as far as drum/cymbal setups- its more about what what the drummer needs to have to convey stuff. you know, people like dennis chambers use a huge kit- one bass drum, one snare, three mounted toms, three floor toms, and a mounted bass drum- for his feel and the emotion that he puts across, that's what he has to use. ofcourse, every good drummer can express anything on even the smallest of kits, its just a preference of things to have to be completely comfortable. some people, like dave weckl, use a variety of different kits to become totally.....omnicient of a drumset and its surrounding features. you'll see him playing anything from a bop kit to his nice 6 peice yamaha beech absolute with mounted bongos and djembe. its really preference. _________________ Have a great day, and Groove On!
well not only are drum machines are more prevalent, but more and more albums are using sequenced drums. I myself just co-produced a bossa nova with a keyboard player - the strings, bass, drums were all sequenced. One side of things is that you don't have to worry about the time fluctuated but it doesn't have any feeling.
