You're right Saxgirl, being a musician is very costly. My Bari alone without anything else was $4250! Plus don't get me started on good high quality cymbals for drums (Zildjian A Customs in the $300-400 range for each!) _________________ No one can resist good ol' PapaBehr
Sax players tend to be accessory horders - I think we own more $100-600 mouthpieces, four saxes, related doubles, saxophone necks, neckstraps, things we put in cases, neck pouches, mouthpiece pouches, ligatures, reeds, you name it.
After all the little trial and error we go through with accessories, saxophone playing ends up being very expensive. A lot of saxophonists have a hard time finding one piece of equipment and sticking with it.
I found setups that I like and I've vowed to try not to replace it with anything else ever. Who knows how long that will last before curiousity comes to play...
Fortunately most of us have parents that we can pretty easily convince to give money =P I personally have three saxes: Two from Palm Winds and one that's just a standard Alto. But it really depends on the player; you can have a Selmer Mark VI with a 300-dollar mouthpiece and Vandorren V16 reeds and STILL sound like crap. I guess the best thing to do is get a decent horn and mouthpiece and make sure that you don't get too cocky (which is common among us sax players )

Recorders
My alto, soprano, and sopranino recorders are all Yamahas
Piccolo
Venus metal picc
Flute
Gemeinhardt KG Special flute with Yamaha CY head joint
Oboe
Moennig Philharmonic( up there I believe with top end Lorees, Yamahas etc.) and either my teacher's reeds or reeds from the Edmund Nielsen Reed Company. I also adjust reeds if needed which is a good thing
Clarinet
LeBlanc L4 Bb Clarinet with a VanDoren B45 mouthpiece and
VanDoren reeds
Alto Saxophone
Yamaha 23 with a Selmer C** Mouthpiece and VanDoren reeds
Tenor Saxophone
Selmer Mk VI or Reference copy(can't remember which) with a Yamaha 4C or a Selmer Mouthpiece and VanDoren reeds
Bass Clarinet
Selmer 1403P Bass Clarinet with a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece and whatever tenor reeds I have at the given time
Bassoon
Fox 41 with Meason MH or H reeds
I think its the double reed players that tend to have the most with them... swabs, reeds, reed knives, plaques, cutting blocks, extra cane and staples, etc... and of course their given instrument(s)! I admit, though, I always keep those supplies with my instruments(especially with the oboe).
