With so many great tenor sax players out there, it is really hard to just choose a few that I could say are my "favorites".
1. Michael Brecker - I believe that Brecker is the best saxophone player of our time, the most emulated, and the most ingenuitive (sp?).
2. Joshua Redman - My generation's Brecker, this guy is in his thirties and most sax players cannot touch him.
3. Chris Potter - Another ground breaking saxophonist!
4. Pete Christlieb - If you don't know who this guy is, you have to check him out. LA studio saxophonist with perfect pitch and total recall just like Getz, but with a good sound.
5. Kirk Whalum - If anyone can play pop saxophone, gospel saxophone, it's this guy. If anyone's playing touches you, you will be touched by the playing of Kirk Whalum.
6. Greg Vail - Of course I can't forget my mentor and the guy I still strive to sound like on tenor to this day.
Once again, I really hope I didn't forget anyone.

Shannon is right - so many to choose from.
Brecker, Coltrane and Whalum for me if I had to pick 3. _________________ SAXBOY

I'm just starting to get into Coltrane. I've listened for the longest time but I think now I'm finally starting to appreciate the man for what he's worth.
I agree with the comments made on Brecker. Redman and Potter are my two favorite modern tenor players! I haven't listened to Christlieb or Whalum yet, but will definitely give them a shot. I would also like to add Dexter Gordon to my list. Love his improv style and sound. There are other random tenor players I hear in music all the time that I enjoy listening to. These are guys who are paid to play in a pit band and once in a while they get a solo. They're not the modern greats and they're greatly underrated IMO. _________________ JP |

| Speaking of ballads - Brecker's ballad book or Brecker on Charlie Haden's American Dreams album. Now that is some tenor playing. |

Can't forget Ernie Watts. He sounds great and I really like his approach - very different. _________________ SAXBOY

With soooo many to choose from, where are the others?
I loved Dextor Gordon and Hank Mobley back in school. _________________ SAXBOY
